It’s been a long time since I’ve put one of these together (over a year, in fact…that’s dispiriting), mostly due to trouble finding the right songs and generally being busy. But I happened to hit upon the right one, so Ebirah is up at last!

Nicely done! Very good use of “Bismarck” – it fits perfectly! I have never seen Ebirah before. What’s his story?

Well, what you see is pretty much what you get; he’s a giant crustacean. in ‘Ebirah, Horror of the Deep’ (AKA Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster) He was used by a terrorist organization called the Red Bamboo prevent anyone from landing on or leaving their secret island base. But it turns out that Godzilla has been sleeping inside one of the caverns, so when some castaways end up on the island they set him free and he wrecks the base and fights off Ebirah.
It’s an interesting film, since rather than following any kind of series formula it more takes certain existing concepts – Godzilla, Mothra, giant monsters in general – and presents them as factors in a more or less straight thriller storyline about people shipwrecked on an island run by terrorists. One of my go-to examples for getting creative with an existing fictional world.
