I find it intensely amusing that Rhode Island, of all states, was the most intransigent against the Constitution. There were reasons for that, of course, but I can’t help picturing the other States at the Convention:
“Oh, no; we’ve lost Rhode Island!”
“Well, I suppose, if we really must, we can find a way to muddle on without them…”
It would have been an amusingly Quixotic study if Rhode Island had persisted, so you had the other twelve states forming a single nation and this little dent in one corner. The Monaco of America.
Which actually raises a question of why little nations like Lichtenstein and Monaco make sense in Europe, but don’t make sense in America. But while I have ideas on that, I’d rather give the question some more thought before I expound on it.
Looking forward to your ideas on little nations/states within bigger ones. I have some thoughts in that direction, too. Along the lines of, “So you think your food comes from the supermarket, eh?” 😁
