Ascension Thought

Today is the transplanted Feast of the Ascension: scooped up out of its place in the week and stashed away on a Sunday where it won’t trouble anyone.

This is rather the opposite of the meaning of the event itself. Christ’s bodily Ascension into Heaven is far from His ‘removal’ from the world; the obnoxious preacher finally gone to where he can’t bother us anymore. Rather, it is the rooting of Earth in Heaven and Heaven in Earth. For a Man who has walked on Earth and founded a new society now dwells bodily in Heaven; the clay that formed His Flesh planted in the Celestial court. On the other side, there is now an institution active upon Earth whose Head and many of whose members dwell in Heaven. The Incarnation, once done, cannot be undone; Earthly matters can no longer be safely sealed away from Heavenly ones.

  1. Well said. Who else would like to see an Avengers story all about Thor getting miffed at the Canadians for not celebrating Thanksgiving on his day, and at the end one of his colleagues whispers to the others, “Nobody tell him what they did to the Feast of the Ascension”?

(And, yes, I know that the Avengers are a bunch of New Yorkers, and that New York is one of the few provinces in America that actually does this right. But I still like the idea.)
