1. By hypothesis, we would expect there to be many difficulties and seeming inconsistencies involved in God’s existence. The idea of God is of One who is all-powerful, all-good, all-knowing, and all-wise. Such a Being would necessarily have a vastly different perspective from us, meaning that much of what He would do would seem strange and incomprehensible to us.
Which is to say, I think the nature of the case is that atheism will always be a possible interpretation of this world. There will always be a case for it. Hence why Faith is a virtue.
2. Fundamentally, while I think the logical case for God’s existence is more or less airtight, I would say that it isn’t the main issue for me (and, honestly, I think there are very few people for whom it is). I know my own intellectual limitations, and know that even the most brilliant of philosophers may have massive blindspots. When it comes down to it, if reason is to be called into question, then the answer is simply that I would rather follow Christ even if there were no Christ than not do so.
Meaning that, if someone were to present a clear logical case that atheist materialism were true, I think the only honorable answer would be “if materialism is true, then it doesn’t matter whether I believe in the truth or not, and a Christian worldview is undeniably more appealing. But if Christianity is true, then my being unable to answer your argument doesn’t mean that no one can. So, since I would much rather live in a world where God became Man, to hell with your materialistic world.”
3. One of the highlights of this week was a student sharing a cheesy pick-up line (which I think he got from some show or other):
“Are you from Tennessee? Because you’re the only Ten I see!”
I recommended the girls in class give the following answer, if it were ever used on them:
“By that logic, you must be from Ohio.”
4. A midwit might be defined as one who sees things others miss, but still misses the point.
5. Simulation hypothesis seems to me to be the favoured framework for people smart enough to perceive patterns of design and intention in the world, but unwilling to face the reality of God. Simulation hypothesis allows them to keep the idea of being created with a purpose without any obligation to their creator.
6. It is an undeniable fact that the finest swordsman in the world can be killed by any idiot with a gun. Whether you state this fact with satisfaction or sadness says a great deal about your character.
7. When it comes to jokes, I find a skeptic learning that the supernatural is real is much funnier than a believer learning that it isn’t, because it leaves much more scope for imagining what happens next. A believer learning he’s wrong is simply a door slam; skeptic learning he’s wrong is a door blown open.
