Sunday Thought: Toy God

The God of the deists is often described as a “watchmaker God,” but I think a better appellation would be a clockwork God. That is, a God whom man can wind up and make go as he likes: a toy God, who will never tell you something you don’t want to hear or ask anything of you that you don’t want to do. He is a God whose only attributes are those that you, the worshiper, find reasonable and acceptable, and He approves of you for standing in judgment over Him in this way, as it shows what a fine, rational fellow you are, just as He made you to be. You may safely thank God that you are not like other men.

That is to say, the God of the deists (which is frankly how most people today view God) is a God made in man’s own image, specifically the image of this particular man.
