50 More Quotes for AFI

It’s hardly definitive, but I still like the AFI ‘100 Years, 100 Quotes’ list, especially this excellent montage someone put together of it. It’s a fun sort of quick summary of film history. That said, it was definitely missing a lot of lines I would have wanted to see included.

So, I decided to take their 100 Quotes list and make my own of 50 More to go with it.

The Rules I followed for this list were:
-The quotes had to come from an English language film that had been released by the time of the original list in 2005
  -One quote per film
-No films that have already been represented on the original list.

And I now present it to you. Enjoy!

  1. No quotes from already represented films, eh? I guess poor Frank Morgan still won’t get proper recognition for his greatest line, then. (Ditto for Wallace Shawn; for my money, “Inconceivable!” is at least as iconic a line as “My name is Inigo Montoya…”, but certainly the latter has more star power.)

Still, it’s not a bad list, for all that. If, as I would argue, the true test of a great line is whether people quote it in contexts unrelated to the movie, even I with my sheltered and haphazard experience of pop culture can testify to the greatness of at least a fifth of the entrants. And the only really glaring omissions I can think of are “Release the Kraken!” and “Hello, everyone, this is Mrs. Norman Maine”, so that’s pretty good. (Oh, and just out of curiosity, what kind of program did you use to splice it all together? Pretty smooth job, I thought.)

    • Good, glad you liked it. Though I’m curious which of Frank Morgan’s lines you’re referring to, since I can think of several (“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” “I can’t come back; I don’t know how it works!” “I’m a very good man, I’m just a very bad wizard” etc.)

Final Cut Pro’s the program I use for all my videos.
