The giant, profit-oriented corporation does not care about your personal happiness or fulfillment. They are not pushing ideas upon you because they genuinely and disinterestedly think that they are true or beneficial; they do it because it is profitable to them. It's really kind of odd how often we seem to forget that.
Friday Flotsam: Birthday Mindset, ‘My Hero Academia’, and Other Stories
1. Yesterday was my birthday, which is once again depressing to realize. I'm never satisfied - or even close to it - of what I've done with my life so far. But I'm trying not to think in those terms and to instead try to think of whether I'm doing better than I was yesterday. … Continue reading Friday Flotsam: Birthday Mindset, ‘My Hero Academia’, and Other Stories

Thought of the Day: On Uploading Consciousness
One of the tropes of modern materialist religion is the idea of a final 'salvation' for the elect via uploading their consciousnesses to some kind of supercomputer that would allow them to 'live forever' free of their imperfectly limited fleshy parts. It's rather hilariously absurd (even granting that such a thing is possible), because a … Continue reading Thought of the Day: On Uploading Consciousness
Poem – “The Song of the Strange Ascetic”
If I had been a Heathen,I'd have praised the purple vine,My slaves should dig the vineyards,And I would drink the wine. But Higgins is a Heathen,And his slaves grow lean and grey,That he may drink some tepid milkExactly twice a day. If I had been a Heathen,I'd have crowned Neaera's curls,And filled my life with love … Continue reading Poem – “The Song of the Strange Ascetic”
Brief Christ the King Thoughts
Instituted at a time when earthly monarchies were toppling or falling one-by-one, the Feast of Christ the King is meant to remind us that Our Lord does not only rule the 'spiritual' life and the Church, but all Earthly things as well. All nations are rightly subject to Him in all their affairs, not just … Continue reading Brief Christ the King Thoughts
A Profound Experience at Comic Con
Last weekend I went up to Grand Rapids Comic Con with a friend. It was fun, as usual, but during it I had probably one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had at one of these things. One of the guests was Donnie Dunagan, whose name you probably don't know, but who has the … Continue reading A Profound Experience at Comic Con
Friday Flotsam: ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ and Going Back
1. The big exciting thing from this past week I think deserves it's own post, so I'll talk about that one later. 2. I pulled up 2013's Jack the Giant Slayer earlier this week. You know, I'm a little torn on that; on the one hand, it's silly, cheap-looking (especially in the costumes), it's depiction … Continue reading Friday Flotsam: ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ and Going Back
Coming Soon: ‘A Gentleman Instructed’
Very excited to finally announce my next publication: a very different kind of project than any I've done before, and one that I've been working on again and off again for a year or more (I once thought it would be ready in April, which is either a testament to hope or an indictment of … Continue reading Coming Soon: ‘A Gentleman Instructed’
